Eleider Alvarez is a 28-year old light heavyweight from Columbia (by way of Montreal) with a 12-0 record (8 KO’s) and a boxrec.com rating of #11.  He was a standout amateur, competing in the world championships in 2007 and the Olympics in Beijing in 2008 (losing in the second round), but as a professional he is yet to be truly tested (having beaten fighters rated #63, #67, and #275 in each of his last three contests).

This Friday, however, he faces a MAJOR step up in class when he takes on Allan Green, a 33-year old veteran with a great deal of “world champion-caliber” experience.  Green is 32-4 with 22 knockouts, and while he has lost 3 of his last 6 fights (to Mikkel Kessler, Glen Johnson, and Andre Ward), he does have a pretty good track record of beating decent Canadian fighters (Sebastien Demurs (#103) in 2011 and Renan St.

Juste (#38) in 2012), and he has generally given a good account of himself even in losing efforts. This is an interesting matchup.  Alvarez is undefeated (but unproven), with an exceptional amateur background, but Green, the consummate professional, is an experienced fighter with quick hands and good counter punching skills.

The problem, as I see it, is that he is too easy to hit, he is easy to hurt, and his record substantiates the notion that he is always a notch below the very best in the division.  While I don’t think Alvarez is at that “very best” level yet, I do think he is a powerful fighter with quick hands, good head movement and a lot of potential.

In the end, I expect a very good fight with a lot of back and forth action that could possibly result in several knockdowns.  However, if Alvarez can get inside Green’s jab, outwork him, and make it a physical affair, I think he can be more effective, and ultimately keep his undefeated streak intact.
