AFP IS NOW CLOSING THIS LIVE REPORT, after the brave British and Irish Lions just about held on to defeat hosts Australia 23-21 in a nail-biting and brutal first Test that went down to the last kick of the match. The second encounter of the three-Test series is in Melbourne in a week's time.

1204 GMT: Australia's hulking captain James Horwill rues missed chances and ill-discipline. "It is must-win," he says of the second Test of the Wallaby-Lions epic next week in Melbourne.

1201 GMT: "It was entertaining that's for sure," says Lions skipper Sam Warburton, as the thousands of Lions fan acclaim their team. "It was way too close for comfort. That last 20 minutes was really hard and we had to dig in. It is out of your control when there is a kick in the last minute, but massive delight."

80 mins: British and Irish Lions beat Australia 23-21 after Kurtley Beale slips with the last kick of the match and misses a penalty.

BEALE MISSES PENALTY, LIONS WIN

78 mins: Lions hanging on to their two-point lead as the clock counts down in the final minutes. Can the Wallabies pull something out of the bag in the dying moments?

75 mins: Kurtley Beale, so impressive since he came on, fluffs his big chance to put the hosts in front. A real pressure kick, and Beale's nerve fails him.

MISSED PENALTY (Beale, Australia)

72 mins: Into the last 10 minutes and the Wallabies have all the momentum. They smell blood and are again making progress in the Lion half. Do the Lions look like they are running out of steam?

68 mins: That sets it up for a grandstand finish in the first Test. Leigh Halfpenny puts the Lions further in front, before Kurtley Beale makes a surging run to within the Lions five-metre line. His unerring penalty puts the Wallabies just two points behind.

AUSTRALIA 21 LIONS 23 (Beale penalty)

AUSTRALIA 18 LIONS 23 (Halfpenny penalty)

61 mins: Kurtley Beale, who started on the bench, slots one between the posts to bring the hosts to within a whisker of the Lions lead.

AUSTRALIA 18 LIONS 20 (Beale penatly)

59 mins: Brutal grinding scrum in the Wallaby half. Australia finally kick the ball away and then begin another assault on the Lions. Nothing in it now. This might be a key moment in a fiercely contested clash.

56 mins: Lions on the move and North is haring away again, but the officials call it back for a forward pass. Let-off for the Wallabies because North was on his way again.

51 mins: James O'Connor has had a torrid time with the boot, but he keeps his nerve to reduce the Lions' lead just moments after Cuthbert's moment of individual brilliance. Game on.

AUSTRALIA 15 LIONS 20 (O'Connor penalty)

48 mins: Terrific stuff from Alex Cuthbert as he bursts through the Wallaby backline for his fourth try as a Lion. He rampaged his way through several challenges from gold-shirted Aussies but nobody could stop him.

AUSTRALIA 12 LIONS 20 (Halfpenny conversion)

TRY! (Alex Cuthbert, Lions)

48 mins: We lose yet another Wallaby on a stretcher, this time Pat McCabe. Does not seem badly hurt, but he's out as well. Liam Gill is on.

46 mins: Wallabies start again from well back in their own half, Kurtley Beale has been a big figure since coming on and is in the thick of it again. They look for the blistering pace of Folau but cannot find him this time. Cries of "Lions! Lions!" ring around a sell-out crowd.

42 mins: We are straight back to it. Will Genia overcooks a kick and we are into a lineout, from where the Wallabies take the advantage and try to pressure the Lions, before a poor O'Connor pass gives the Lions the ball back. Very bitty stuff to get the half under way.

1105 GMT: AFP reporter Andrew Dent says the Lions supporters had been a bit muted, until George North streaked away to put the tourists in a lead which, on the balance of the first 40 minutes, they just about deserve.

1100 GMT: The British and Irish Lions emerge from a captivating first-half 13-12 up, with Lions man George North and his Wallaby rival Israel Folau lighting up a gripping half of this first Test. Australia's kicking let them down, however, and they have lost two of their starters to concussion.

HALF-TIME: AUSTRALIA 12 LIONS 13
40 mins: Leigh Halfpenny fails with a penalty from out wide -- his first miss in four attempts -- just shaving the post. Lions go to the break with the most slender of advantages.

39 mins: Another nasty casualty for the Australians, this time it is Berrick Barnes who goes off on a stretcher and in a neck brace. Cheers go up from the home side for his replacement, the enigmatic Kurtley Beale.

34 mins: This is some debut from Israel Folau out on the Wallaby wing. Remember, he previously played rugby league and Aussie Rules, but seems right at home here as he claims his second try of the evening. James O'Connor though again fails with the kick to keep the Lions just in the lead.

AUSTRALIA 12 LIONS 13 (O'Connor missed conversion)

TRY! (Folau, Australia)

Still catching my breath after all that. First, George North thought he had run over another try, but after going to the monitors, he was denied. Leigh Halfpenny then stepped up to stretch the Lions' lead.

32 mins: AUSTRALIA 7 LIONS 13 (Halfpenny penalty)

30 mins: NO TRY! North denied after TV replays.

25 mins: Berrick Barnes gets his kick all wrong, presenting the hugely talented George North with a chance to stretch his legs and canter home for an easy try. Lions surge into the lead.

AUSTRALIA 7 LIONS 10 (Halfpenny conversion)

TRY! (North, Lions)

25 mins: Now it is the Lions' chance to turn the screw as they play for -- and win -- a penalty deep in the Australians' half. Leigh Halfpenny holds his nerve to pop the ball between the posts.

AUSTRALIA 7 LIONS 3 (Halfpenny penalty)

20 mins: Aussies again on the front foot and they lead 7-0. Halfway through the first half of the first Test. It has not disappointed so far.

18 mins: Nerves from the Lions? Alex Cuthbert makes a real mess of an up-and-under. Crossed arms from Lions coach Warren Gatland.

14 mins: The Lions lost the advantage and before they knew it, Will Genia was at full throttle into the visitors' half, before offloading inch-perfect to League and Aussie Rules convert Israel Folau. The crowd go bonkers. First blood to the Wallabies.

AUSTRALIA 7 LIONS 0 (O'Connor conversion)

TRY! (Folau, Australia)

10 mins: After a bright start from the home side it is the turn of the Lions to put on the pressure as they threaten the Aussie line with some neat handling. Wallaby defence holds firm.

7 mins: Another MISSED PENALTY from James O'Connor, just missing left of the upright.

4 mins: MISSED PENALTY (O'Connor, Australia).

He is taken off in a neck brace, on a stretcher, but gives a thumbs-up to the capacity crowd, indicating he is not seriously hurt, thankfully. Pat McCabe replaces him.

1 min: Early casualty, and it's Wallaby debutant Christian Leali'ifano. His game is already over. The stretcher is out. Looks like a very nasty head or neck injury after a crunching tackle.

1004 GMT: The talk is over, the formalities done. Here we go then...Hold on tight.

1001 GMT: Lions are out their cage first, led by their brilliant young captain Sam Warburton. Screams and cheers go up, then notch up to another level as the Wallabies spring out behind them.

0957 GMT: Television cameras flash to the Australian changing room, just under 10 minutes to the bi

g off. The Wallabies, who have not played a Test since December, look right up for it. The Wallabies then come to a huddle in the dressing room.

0954 GMT: AFP reporter Robert Smith says that a huge roar goes up for Irish legend Brian O'Driscoll as his face appears on the big screen. The old warhorse will be key if the Lions are to arrest a run that has seen them fail to win a series since 1997.

0950 GMT: General opinion seems to be that whoever takes this first Test will go on to win the three-match series. Then again, the Lions won the opening clash in Brisbane in 2001... but went on to lose the series.

0947 GMT: Wallabies skipper James Horwill tells a television interviewer that it's imperative for the

home side to keep their composure, with expectations of a frantic opening to this first Test.

0942 GMT: Those Lions fans are making themselves heard, says AFP reporter Andrew Dent, at the scene, who tells me that all the Wallabies are now out on the pitch doing their pre-match warm-up.

0937 GMT: Smith says that it is a sell-out, meaning about 52,000 fans are expected to pack this arena. And there are plenty of red shirts on show -- that's the colours of the Lions, of course.

0933 GMT: About 30 minutes to go and the players are out on the turf of the impressive Suncorp Stadium doing their warm-up routines. AFP reporter Robert Smith, at the ground, says that the Lions were out first, raring to go.

WELCOME TO AFP?s LIVE REPORT of the highly anticipated first Test between Australia and the British and Irish Lions.

Warren Gatland's experienced Lions will enter Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium as slight favourites against the home team, despite their mid-week defeat to the ACT Brumbies.

The tourists are seeking their first series victory in 16 years.

Australia, also coached by a New Zealander, Robbie Deans, boast a bag-of-tricks backline led by scrumhalf Will Genia and with league convert Israel Folau making his Test debut on the wing.

The action in Brisbane, the first of what promises to be three brutal Tests Down Under, gets going at 1005 GMT. Finally, the hype is nearly, nearly over.
