The Michigan International Speedway is a 2-mile oval track that typically sees high speeds. With the new Gen-6 cars already setting track records on similar tracks in the 2013 Sprint Cup season we can expect more of the same Sunday (6/16) afternoon in the Quicken Loans 400.
The drivers and crews will need to get the balance between handling and power right in order for drivers to be able to drive past cars to get out front and remain there. If that balance is not right, drivers will find it hard to pass and could lose control of their cars in the turns that feature 18 degrees of banking. If a driver does lose control of their car at the speeds they will be driving, it is likely they will spin into the outside wall and end their chances of a win. Additionally, a car spinning in front of other cars could collect more cars in the process creating the “big one” on these types of tracks.
Mark Martin has the most wins of any active driver in the Sprint Cup series at Michigan International Speedway. Mark has been to Victory Lane in Michigan five times during his long career. His last win at the track came in 2009. Could the oldest active NASCAR driver get his sixth win at Michigan Sunday?
Eight other active NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers have multiple wins at Michigan. Bobby Labonte has captured three checkered flags there. Seven drivers have won twice at the track. Those drivers include Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Greg Biffle who both won a race at Michigan in the 2012 season. Dale Jr.’s win came when he raced a special black Batman “Dark Knight Rises” paint scheme. This weekend he will have a special black Superman “Man of Steel” paint scheme on his #88 Chevrolet. Will that bring him the added luck to get win number three at Michigan?
The other drivers to have two wins at Michigan include: Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, and Denny Hamlin. All of these drivers would see a huge benefit to their 2013 NASCAR season with a win Sunday.
Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, Brian Vickers, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch have all captured a single win at Michigan International Speedway. These drivers will be doing everything they can to move their name up to the list of multiple race winners at the track.
